Image Redaction Tool

Draw boxes over sensitive parts of an image and permanently black them out at the pixel level before downloading, entirely in your browser.

How this tool works

Upload an image, then click and drag directly on it to draw one or more boxes over anything you want to hide — a face, an ID number, an account detail. Each box is immediately painted onto the image's real pixel data in your chosen color, not layered on top of it, so there's nothing left to peel away. When you're done, download the redacted image.

Why "permanent" matters for redaction

A common mistake is covering sensitive information with a shape in a slideshow or design tool and sharing that file — the original content is often still recoverable underneath, since it was never actually removed. This tool avoids that by drawing directly into the image's pixel data at its full natural resolution (not the shrunk-down size it's displayed at on your screen), so what you see is exactly what ends up in the downloaded file.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Works on raster images (JPEG, PNG, WebP, and similar) — not PDFs or other document formats.
  • Redaction boxes are rectangular; for irregular shapes, draw several overlapping boxes.
  • Downloading a JPEG re-compresses the whole image (standard JPEG behavior) — use PNG if you need a lossless result.

Privacy by design

Your image never leaves your device — everything, including the redaction itself, happens directly in your browser using the Canvas API. Nothing is uploaded to any server.

This tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded or stored.
